Verbund - GrAmLi – Green Ammonia Linz (AT12)
The project GrAmLi is developed by VERBUND AG in full alignment and close cooperation with the IPCEI project AT01 of Borealis Agrolinz Melamine GmbH
VERBUND is Austria’s leading energy utility and one of the largest producers of hydro-electricity in Europe. Via subsidiaries, VERBUND also operates the Austrian electricity and gas transmission grids. The Group generates close to 100% of its electricity from climate friendly, renewable energy, primarily from hydropower, complemented by wind and solar power, and is also active in energy transmission and international trading and sales. VERBUND has been listed on the Vienna Stock Exchange since 1988 and trades electricity in 12 countries, generating around 8 bn. EUR in annual revenue in 2022 with approximately 3.500 employees.
The project “Green Ammonia Linz” (GrAmLi) intends to enable the first production of green ammonia in Austria. VERBUND plans to implement an electrolytic hydrogen generation facility on the premises of Borealis in the Chemical Park Linz, and integrate it in existing industrial processes, in particular the ammonia and nitric acid production of Borealis.
GRAMLI aims to achieve following objectives:
Scaling up green hydrogen generation facility: The demonstration of the flexible operation of a green hydrogen generation facility equipped with a 60 MW proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyser and integrated hydrogen storage and buffering concept.
The integration of electrolyser outputs in existing industrial facilities: The demonstration of the effective integration of the green hydrogen generation facility in an existing industrial site by maximizing the efficiency of all related (new and existing) industrial processes.
The provision of advanced grid services: The project will be operated flexibly to assist the electricity system through the provision of control reserve capacities, through timed operation and short-term load adjustments.
The techno-economic optimization of operation to achieve short-term optimization of multiple revenue streams from various product markets, energy markets and indirect effects coming from the surrounding facilities
The Ammonia production units which in course of this project shall be fed with green H2 are located in the industrial park “Chemiepark Linz” located in the city of Linz, Upper Austria next to the Danube River. Linz is at the heart of one of Austria’s industrial technology hot spots and home to one of the major industrial hubs of Austria. The project is currently conducting the basic engineering study, the permitting process and the partner selection for the main technology and long lead items.
