Synthos - Development and demonstration of hydrogen generation technology (PL03)
Development and demonstration of hydrogen generation technology based on high-temperature steam decomposition using zero emission energy resources
The project will be executed by Poland-based company Synthos. The company’s business activity is focused on synthetic rubbers, styrene plastic and dispersions and latexes. Synthos belongs to the world’s biggest producers of synthetic rubber and expandable polystyrene (the main component of polystyrene foam) and is one of the biggest Polish producers of chemical commodities. With respect to meet own energy needs as well as recognizing the decarbonization is a key target of the company, Synthos is running an investment strategy of assuming transition into advanced ecological energy sources, including clean hydrogen.
The project concerns developing two alternative technologies aimed at the construction of a demonstration plant capable to generate hydrogen on an industrial scale at a price below 5 EUR/kg. The project would enable accumulating specialist knowledge allowing the construction of a hybrid hydrogen production system based on the processes of high-temperature Cu-Cl thermochemical water splitting cycle (TWSC) or a solid oxide electrolyser (SOE). The target technology for the FID phase will be selected based on the results of the R&D phase.
The project location is an industrial area owned by Synthos in Oświęcim, southern Poland. The location is determined by access to a source of energy which will be provided by one of the available sources (CCGT, waste to energy). Also, the company has in the location over 100-employee R&D department. From a wider perspective, the location is perfect for the demonstration of such a project, due to its positioning in the middle of the industrialized zone, with big reliance the fossil fuels (mainly coal). It enables the opportunity to demonstrate the decarbonization measures in the industrial region (with one of the biggest air pollution in the EU).
