The IPCEI project will be implemented by Stargate Hydrogen Solutions OÜ (hereafter: Stargate). Stargate is a deep tech company offering turn-key electrolysis solutions for the production of green hydrogen with renewable energy. Stargate electrolysers offer high efficiency at low cost thanks to innovative PGM-free electrode materials.

The project involves of 5 direct and 15 indirect IPCEI partners from across the Europe. The direct partners are ENEL Green Power (IT), Elcogen (EE), Skeleton Technologies (EE), McPhy (FR); H2B2 (ES).

Within the 5-year project a mass-manufacturable and highly efficient PGM free 1 MW ceramics-based alkaline electrolysis stack will be developed and pilot manufacturing of electrolysers will be set up by Stargate. The project will be implemented in two phases covering the R&D&I and FID. The detailed objectives include:

  • development of a mass-manufacturable 1 MW alkaline electrolysis stack operating at a pressure of > 20 bar, achieving an electrolysis current density of 0.67 A/cm2 at a cell voltage of < 1.6 V in high-efficiency operation mode[1], and an electrolysis current density of 1 A/cm2 at a cell voltage of <1.9 V in high-current operation mode.
  • development and upscaling of production processes for electrolyzer manufacturing and first industrial deployment (FID) of an electrolyzer Gigafactory with a CAPEX target of 550 EUR/kW.

The R&D&I phase started with electrodes and alkaline electrolyser stack development, fabrication, and lab-scale testing for demonstrating H2 production at 45 kWh/kg. Then, the production will be scaled up to MW scale. The R&D&I covers also testing of Industry 4.0 and machine learning methods in pilot scale. And the final step of the R&D&I phase is to improve the reliability and efficiency of the BoP and stack components.

The conceptual engineering of the Gigafactory and equipment purchasing marks the start of the FID phase. The Gigafactory commissioning for PGM free and pressurised alkaline electrolysers will follow.

The project has started with R&D&I activities in July 2022 and runs until 2027. The activities will be implemented in Estonia.

Stargate premises are located in Estonia. HQ and laborotory are located in the capital city Tallinn and the assembly station is just 5 min drive from Tallinn.
