Sener, Spanish engineering and technology company, has been selected to contribute to the development of next-generation electrolyzers. The project includes the R&D activities to evolve actual technology to better fulfil the requirements that the market is demanding to construct big-scale plants feed from renewable sources, as well as the implementation of manufacturing facilities to attend the demand to comply with the objectives declared by the European Commission and the Spanish Government. This project is being executed in collaboration with European and Spanish technology centers, industrial companies, and initiatives in the Basque Hydrogen Corridor (BH2C).

The key objectives of this project are:

  • Optimize the existing alkaline electrolyzer solutions and customize it to the future hydrogen uses to contribute to the decarbonization of industry and society.
  • Scaling up the systems to gain competitiveness.
  • Improve operating efficiency and flexibility when powering electrolyzers with renewable generation.
  • Develop a new generation of proprietary technology electrolyzers starting in 2025.

The IPCEI Hy2Tech program will finance the R&D and industrial deployment activities. Sener expects this project to create at least 300 direct jobs, as well as a further 500 indirect jobs as it develops the supply chain with local companies. The overall project will represent a total investment of 30M euros in the next 8 years.
