CARTAGENA: Large scale electrolyzer 24/7 Hydrogen demand

The Cartagena Hydrogen Network S.L., currently wholly owned by Repsol Industrial Transformation S.L. (100 % Repsol S.A.). Hydrogen developments is one of the important pillar of low carbon strategy of Repsol to become net zero by 2050.

The aim of the CARTAGENA: LARGE SCALE ELECTROLYZER project is to generate a positive impact on the employment and decarbonization consistent with the EU’s objective, as well as to be a pioneer in the technological transformation and kick-starting of the renewable hydrogen ecosystem in Spain and Europe. 
The 100 MW alkaline electrolysis plant is planned to operate 24/7. The plant will include all the process, utilities and general facilities to support a continuous operation.
The project includes objectives related to sustainability, such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving and maximizing the use of renewable resources. It will underpin the objectives related to security of supply, without compromising flexibility services.

The project will be located within Repsol Cartagena Refinery, Cartagena, Spain. 
Cartagena is an important hydrogen hub at Mediterranean coast and one of the points of Corridor B of European Hydrogen Backbone. 
The project will support the Cartagena Valley initiative, allowing the deployment of the necessary infrastructure for the use of hydrogen in industry, mobility, and in the gas and electricity sector, thus fostering decarbonization and innovation in the European manufacturing industry associated with these sectors. 
the project is progressing well, with the pre-FEED phase completed and the pre-FID activities currently in progress. Construction of the site should be in progress between 2024 and 2025. and the start-up date planned for Q1/Q2.
