ORLEN - Hydrogen Eagle (PL02)

The Hydrogen Eagle project (PL02) is executed by the ORLEN, the biggest multi-energy company in the CEE which is active across the whole value chain, both in traditional fossil-based sectors (refining, petchem, natural gas) and in the area of low and zero emission technologies (renewables, hydrogen, biofuels, e-mobility, nuclear energy, CCUS).

Hydrogen Eagle PL02 is ORLEN’s comprehensive infrastructure project to ensure the holistic development of the whole hydrogen value chain in the region. The main objectives of the project are to launch five production HUBs of both low- and zero-emission hydrogen (HUB Offshore, HUB North, Hub South, Waste to hydrogen plants in Płock and Ostrołęka), as well as up to 54 hydrogen refuelling stations. Hydrogen production plants are to be supplied by diversified RES portfolio (onshore, offshore, PV), as well as municipal waste treatment plants. The total production capacity of low and zero-emission hydrogen is to be 30 kt/year, of which 15 kt is to be hydrogen from waste. The estimated installed capacity of electrolyzers at all locations will be about 110 MW. Due to its cross-cutting nature, the Hydrogen Eagle project will support hydrogen uptake in both transport (mainly road public transport, HDV and rail) and industry, leading to the gradual decarbonisation of the economy. Production hubs and the offtake markets will be located throughout Poland, creating a specific hydrogen backbone at the national level, being at the same time an indispensable element in the construction of the North-South and East-West hydrogen transport corridors (TEN-T). The Hydrogen Eagle project, developed by ORLEN, was included in the final list of IPCEI Hy2Use (Important Project of Common European Interest) approved by the European Commission with the second largest amount of possible funding among IPCEI Hy2Use projects.
