NextChem (IT36)
NextChem IPCEI Hy2Use project is executed by NextChem, MAIRE group company which provides Sustainable Technology Solutions to make energy transition happen. Thanks to the extensive know-how of hydrogen, carbon capture, fuels, chemicals and polymers, NextChem creates innovative and sustainable processes from non-fossil feedstock.
The project will set the first Hydrogen Valley in Rome, the first industrial-scale technological hub for the development of the national supply chain for the production, transport, storage and use of hydrogen for the decarbonization of industrial processes and for sustainable mobility. In the initial phase a production of 1,500 tons/year of hydrogen and 55,000 tons/year of ethanol is expected. The production of hydrogen could grow according to its demand, up to 20,000 tons per year, proportionally reducing the volumes of ethanol. Thanks to NextChem proprietary Waste to Chemicals technology, the plant will use 200,000 tons/year of non-recyclable solid waste as raw material, thus also contributing to optimizing the waste treatment cycle in Rome through a conversion process significantly reducing total CO2 emissions. The process consists of a partial oxidation of the carbon and hydrogen contained in the waste in a syngas, also called Circular Gas. Thanks to this technology about 85% of the incoming material is converted into Circular Gas, usable as such, for its reducing qualities, within hard-to-abate production processes, such as steel and refining industry, replacing synthetic gas produced from fossil sources, and as a basis to produce Circular Hydrogen, Methanol or Ethanol.
The incoming waste mix will be provided by the main waste management companies in Rome.
The next steps concern the start of the project activities and all the necessary permits, in order to ensure the plant start-up in the first half of 2027, in compliance with the funding. The plant will rise in the South-West of Rome.
