Neste is the world’s leading producer of sustainable aviation fuel, renewable diesel and renewable feedstock solutions for various polymers and chemicals industry uses. Neste also develops chemical recycling technologies and capacity to combat plastic waste challenge. Our ambition is to make the Porvoo refinery in Finland the most sustainable refinery in Europe by 2030 and to reach carbon neutral production by 2035, with renewable hydrogen being one important part of the solution.

With the supply of renewable hydrogen, Neste is planning to replace fossil sources used in its refinery processes. Neste is working on a 120 MW electrolyser project to produce renewable (i.e. green) hydrogen at its Porvoo refinery. The project is currently in the basic engineering phase. The investment decision readiness is expected to be reached in early 2024. If an investment decision is made, green hydrogen production could start in 2026. In connection with the project, sector integration opportunities will be investigated, including the utilisation of electrolyser heat in district heating.

Additionally, Neste is developing a concept for utilising Power-to-X technology to turn renewable electricity and CO2 into fuels, chemicals and materials and that way bring renewable electricity into applications where direct electrification does not come into question. The work includes examination of the business viability of the most attractive technologies. Scalability and feasibility implementation is in special focus when analysing these technologies.
