MassHylia Hydrogen S.A.S (FR15)
The Masshylia project is executed by a Joint Venture between TotalEnergies and ENGIE which both share a common ambition to decarbonize industry and heavy duty mobility and therefore intend to install an overall 120 MW electrolyser capacity to support decarbonization of TotalEnergies La Mède biorefinery hydrogen supply for its biofuels production process as well as local heavy mobility usages.
The objective of the Masshylia project is to support local industry and heavy duty mobility decarbonization by developing and operating a 120MW electrolyzer supplied by low carbon and renewable electricity and able to produce approximately 15,000 t/y low carbon and renewable hydrogen. RTE, the French grid Transmission System Operator, is in charge of the technical design of the 120MW electrical line connection to the French national grid via a new underground power cable that will bring electrons to Masshylia electrolyser.
The Masshylia project has been labelled as innovative and of great interest to the region by several regional institutions (Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur South Region, Métropole Aix-Marseille-Provence, Capenergies competitiveness cluster). It benefits from the support of local actors for its ability to reduce CO2 emissions and demonstrate the economic advantages of low carbon and renewable hydrogen and its integration into the local ecosystem as well as at the European level.
The project has already requested additional grid capacity for a future extension of the Project and connection to local hydrogen storage capacities (Geostock, Hygreen) and pipeline network such as EU TEN-T backbone will also be studied.
Masshylia project is located at the heart of TotalEnergies La Mède biorefinery, close to Marseille in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur South region in France. Masshylia project is currently in advanced engineering studies phase and is aiming at a final investment decision for early 2024 with a view to a first hydrogen production by mid 2026.
