John Cockerill

Driven since 1817 by the entrepreneurial spirit and thirst for innovation of its founder, the John Cockerill Group develops large-scale technological solutions to meet the needs of its time: facilitating access to fossil free energies, enabling sustainable industrial production, preserving natural resources, contributing to greener mobility, enhancing security and installing essential infrastructures.

The John Cockerill’s project within the IPCEI hydrogen framework aims at (i) creating integrated manufacturing capacities able to produce large volume of electrolysers at an efficient cost, up to 1 GW/year by 2030, (ii) developing R&D&I activities and research centers for strong improvement of electrolysers’ performances and associated hydrogen equipment, (iii) developing a pan-European supply chain and ecosystem with a range of local private and public partners and (iv) training, maintaining and capturing return of experience from hydrogen production sites.

The creation of an attractive pole of competences and employment dedicated to a newly expanding technology will help the reconversion of Grand Est and Walloon regions. Net direct job creation for this ecosystem will grow progressively and reach approximately, in 2030, 290 full time equivalent in Grand Est region and up to 100 full time equivalent in Wallonia. It will also positively impact some small and medium size actors in France but also in several European Member States where some component will be sourced or manufactured.

The gigafactory, situated in Aspach (Alsace), will be fully operational in 2024.

The deployment of the project in Grand Est will not only reduce the CAPEX of the project by reusing existing facilities within John Cockerill Group but also help disadvantaged regions, impacted by the shutdown of French nuclear power plant in Fessenheim.
