Iberdrola

IBERDROLA is a world leader in clean energy, with 40 GW of installed renewable capacity and the goal of doubling its current portfolio to 80 GW by 2030. The company is determined to continue spearheading global decarbonisation and is strongly committed to green hydrogen, with the ambition to install 3 GW of electrolysers worldwide by the end of this decade, thus contributing to the development of the entire renewable hydrogen value chain.

IBERDROLA IPCEI project is focused on reduction GHG emissions in Southern Europe through the deployment of a green hydrogen production facility in order to supply green hydrogen mainly to the fertilizer industry (Fertiberia is the project anchor offtaker) and other indusrial uses such as chemicals, mobility applications like heavy-duty transport, or even though export by ship or injection into hydrogen pipelines once the infraestructure will be ready. The project will install 780 MW of electrolyser capacity and 1,255 MW of dedicated PV plant to produce 87,600 tonnes of green hydrogen per year with an associated reduction in emmissions close to 930,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.

The project consists of four phases in two locations close to industrial hubs such as Puertollano and Palos de la Frontera. The four stages are: 1) Puertollano I, with 20 MW of electrolyser and 35 MW of dedicated PV, 2) Palos de la Frontera I, with 200 MW of electrolyser and 325 MW of dedicated PV, 3) Puertollano II, with 200 MW of electrolyser and 325 MW of dedicated PV and 4) Palos de la Frontera II, with 360 MW of electrolyser and 35 MW of dedicated PV.

Puertollano I phase is already built since 2022 and the commissioning stage is nearing completion. The project includes a 35 MW of dedicated PV facility + battery system, an underground power line in order to connect the PV facility with the hydrogen production site, and an electrolyser system of 20 MW (16 stacks of 1.25 MW each with a common balance of stacks and a common balance of plant). The electrolyser is capable of producing up to 360 kg/h of hydrogen at 30 bar, and the facility also has a hydrogen compression system to allow increasing the pressure from 30 to 60 bar and a hydrogen storage system with a total capacity of more than 6 tonnes. The project will be operating during the next 25 years and will be operated and maintained by Iberdrola.

Palos de la Frontera I is already at an advance stage of the FEED phase and FID will be taken over the next few months. Puertollano II and Palos de la Frontera II are already in the early stages of the FEED phases and FID will be taken over the next year.
