Hydrogenics Europe NV is a technology manufacturer of water electrolyzers with over 30 years of experience in designing, manufacturing, building, and installing industrial and commercial hydrogen generation systems around the globe. Hydrogenics manufactures alkaline and PEM water electrolyzer technologies for hydrogen production in industrial processes, hydrogen refueling stations and power-to-X projects.

In 2019, Cummins acquired Hydrogenics. In March 2023, Cummins brought together all zero-emission technologies under the new brand Accelera by Cummins. Accelera offers a diverse portfolio of zero-emission solutions, including, among others, electrolyzers to produce green hydrogen.

Within the IPCEI framework, Cummins is expanding its production facilities in Belgium to develop a “Gigawatt Factory” for producing water electrolysis systems. (The term “Gigawatt” refers to the planned overall production capacity of up to 1 Gigawatt of electrolyzer technology per year.)

The GW Fab will integrate innovative technologies minimizing the production costs and the environmental footprint of the manufacturing process through energy efficiency measures and onsite renewable power production.

These benefits will have direct positive impact on Cummins’ value chain partners and the related upcoming and mutual hydrogen infrastructure projects.

The enlargement of the plant in Belgium will strengthen the European hydrogen market with a competitive offer, introduce a new standard for electrolyzer technology, and significantly contribute to the common European goals by producing up to 1 GW of PEM cell stacks and electrolyzer systems per year.

As of 2021, Cummins had one manufacturing facility in Belgium, covering an area of 7.600 m². Cummins is now leasing an additional building and expanding its production capacity to 17.200 m². Together, the two facilities will make the new Gigawatt factory.

The two facilities are in Oevel, Belgium:

  • Nijverheidsstraat 48c, 7.600 m².
  • Nijverheidsstraat 10, 9.600 m² (new site).
