The H2ermes project aims to develop, realize, and operate a 100 MW water electrolyzer, connected to nearby offshore wind farms, to generate renewable hydrogen applied in the steel production processes at Tata Steel IJmuiden (Tata Steel) and in various applications in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area (AMA) with an emissions reduction potential of approximately 120 kT CO2 emission on a yearly basis.

Green hydrogen applications will not develop without green hydrogen supply available. Unfortunately, green hydrogen is only used on a small scale and is not present in the AMA. So not only the production, but in particular the use of green hydrogen and the hydrogen infrastructure will need to grow in order to achieve commercially competitive levels and green hydrogen availability in the AMA, leading to substantive CO2-reductions.

Through its scale and interconnection to the Regional Integrated Backbone and Dutch national backbone, cost effective supply of green hydrogen to steel production, circular chemistry, renewable fuels production, mobility and municipalities will be enabled. Furthermore, H2ermes focused on regional heat grid development, enabling the first deployment of green hydrogen and waste heat from electrolysis in the AMA. Based on this 100 MW facility, replication is expected to be possible in other locations.
