Hybrit

HYBRIT Development AB is a development company, equally owned by the three Swedish companies behind the HYBRIT initiative: SSAB (global leader in high strength steels), LKAB (Europe´s largest iron ore producer) and Vattenfall (one of Europe’s largest electricity producers). HYBRIT stands for Hydrogen Breakthrough Ironmaking Technology.

The HYBRIT H2-DR demonstration project entails the construction and ramp-up of the world’s first industrial-scale plant for hydrogen-based direct reduction of iron (H2-DR). The plant will produce 1.35 million tons of sponge iron annually and enable CO2 emission reductions of about 1.85 million tons annually by enabling SSAB to replace a blast furnace with an EAF for primary steelmaking. The H2-DR plant will be situated in Gällivare in northern Sweden and commence its operation in 2027. The plant will include an electrolyser installation of over 500 MW to produce green hydrogen based on fossil-free electricity. The project also includes R&D to address three specific scaling challenges going from the current pilot scale to industrial scale of H2-DR: Hydrogen heating, process and product optimisation and control, and electrolyser technology.

The objective of the HYBRIT H2-DR Demonstration project is to increase the technology readiness of the innovative H2-DR technology from TRL 6/7 to 9 which will also enable further implementation of the technology.
