GRAMLI - Green Ammonia Linz (AT01)
GRAMLI will be realised by two key actors: VERBUND, who is at the forefront of green hydrogen production based on renewable energy in Europe, and LAT Nitrogen, who operates first-in-class industrial-scale ammonia production plants around the world.
The project partners will work together to realise a decarbonisation project that will produce green ammonia on an industrial scale, thereby replacing natural gas-based produced hydrogen currently manufactured by steam methane reforming and significantly contributing to CO2 emission reduction.
The objective of the GRAMLI project is to demonstrate the first complete integration of large-scale green hydrogen production in the ammonia and fertilizer industry. All of the electrolysis’ by products oxygen and waste heat will be valorised and advanced grid services provided. The resulting GHG emission reduction will amount to more than 671.239 tCO2e during the first 10 operational years.
The industrial park “Chemiepark Linz”, located in the city of Linz (Upper Austria), is one of the major industrial hubs of Austria with numerous chemical companies. LAT Nitrogen owns and operates two ammonia plants there .
VERBUND will implement and operate a 60 MW PEM electrolyser - the largest manufactured to date - on the premises of LAT Nitrogen at Chemiepark Linz. The electrolyser will be integrated in LAT Nitrogens’ existing industrial processes and the green hydrogen produced will replace 10% of the grey hydrogen and thus be used for the production of green ammonia. This way, the project partners will materialise the transition to green ammonia production.
