Fincantieri

Fincantieri is one of the largest shipbuilding companies in the world, with over 230 years of history and more than 7,000 ships built. We are leaders in all high value added segments: cruise ships, defence vessels, and specialised offshore vessels. We specialise in ship repairs and conversions, the production of systems and components for the mechanical and electrical sectors, naval interior design solutions, electronic and software systems, infrastructure, marine projects, and post-sales support services.
We are an international company with 10,000 employees and generate approximately 90,000 jobs, in 18 facilities on four continents.

Fincantieri group is part of the ICPEI Hy2Tech. Its Cruise building business unit, the Systems and Components business unit and its subsidiary Isotta Fraschini Motori are involved in the project’s activities. Project cooperation with IPCEI Direct Partners will develop in different directions. With major transport mean designers and builders, we will identify synergies across different mobility sectors on the application of Fuel Cells for transport. Major fuel cell manufacturers (either high temperature or low temperature Fuel Cells) will be involved for the development of high power customized components for maritime. Specialized partners will be involved in hydrogen storage, transport and distribution. In case it is needed, indirect partners will be identified outside the IPCEI partnership, especially in those areas where the maritime expertise is necessary.
A strong cooperation will be developed with major research centers like ENEA and FBK on Fuel Cell assembly and testing, handling systems, in supporting the regulatory framework. Major European universities will also be involved in the theoretical analysis of the operation of innovative systems.

The project will study a ship hybrid architecture aiming at developing a Hybrid Green Power Generation System integrating on-board H2 Fuel Cell stacks and relevant controlling systems. The project will also develop a new generation Internal Combustion Engines fuelled by hydrogen applicable to maritime.
A Green Combined Cycle Gas Turbine will be designed with particular reference to the overview of the system and the identification of key components. This will result in a marine-ready G-CCGT package, including the control system. The overall system will be tested together with the H2 handling system under representative conditions.
In parallel, the integration of H2 technologies onboard cruise ships will be designed, tested and demonstrated in real environment, i.e. onboard new ships.

The part of the project coordinated by Isotta Fraschini Motori concerning the development of the Hydrogen fueled Internal Combustion Engine, will be developed on their premises in Bari (Puglia); G-CCGT package will be developed in Genova (Liguria); the integration of hydrogen technologies onboard new ship design will be done in Trieste (Friuli Venezia Giulia). The construction of the prototype ships will be done in two Italian yards of Fincantieri, still to be identified according to production scheduling.
