De Nora Italy Hydrogen Technologies - Gigafactory (IT17)
The project IT17 - Gigafactory is executed by the companies Industrie De Nora and SNAM via a Special Purpose Vehicle named De Nora Italy Hydrogen Technologies S.r.l. Industrie De Nora is an Italian multinational company, listed on the Euronext Milan stock exchange, specializing in electrochemistry, a leader in sustainable technologies (Electrodes technologies and Water technologies), and with a key role in Green Economy. SNAM, one of the leading Italian listed companies by market capitalisation, is an Italian energy company providing development and management of infrastructures for natural gas transportation as well as sustainable growth solutions.
The project aims to design, construct and validate a large-scale production hub (Gigafactory) for water electrolysis components and fuel cells, as well as modular containerized alkaline electrolyzers. The production capacity of the Gigafactory will be 2 GW and will be characterized by high efficiency through the adoption of Industry 4.0 and IoT principles. The project also includes activities on electrolyzer components and systems, including the development of an innovative containerized electrolyzer, which is integrated into Technical Field 1 'Development of hydrogen generation technologies'. The applicant also participates intoTechnical Field 2 'Development of fuel cell technologies with the objective of developing and manufacturing innovative fuel cell components. Increasing the production capacity of new, highly efficient components and systems for electrolyzers and fuel cells, which aim to improve performance and reduce costs, is essential to enable the widespread deployment of green hydrogen.
The Gigafactory will be located in Cernusco sul Naviglio (Milan) in Italy. The project has started in Q4 2022. Construction work on the Gigafactory is scheduled to start in the second half of 2023, subject to the successful outcome of the authorization process. The Gigafactory is expected to be put in continuous operation by early-2026.
