Bosch Power Units (DE53)
Robert Bosch GmbH is a leading global supplier of technology and services in the business sectors Mobility Solutions, Industrial Technology, Consumer Goods, and Energy and Building Technology. Furthermore, Bosch is active in many fields to establish a hydrogen economy.
Main objective of the project Bosch Power Units is the first industrial deployment of stationary fuel cell systems based on solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) technology.
Related objectives are to develop and establish an entire physical and digital series production landscape for modular 100 kW SOFC systems, including all parts and all relevant accessories. Production sites are to be ramped up, suppliers of manufacturing equipment, testing and inspection facilities are to be integrated, and suppliers of software, components and material are to be developed.
Targeted key values for SOFC systems are an electrical efficiency of around 60 percent, by using additional heat overall efficiency of up to 90 percent are to be achieved - combined with down-to-zero emissions. The operation of a SOFC system is targeted with hydrogen, bio-methane or natural gas or any blends to have an easy market access via the existing gas infrastructure and future hydrogen infrastructure.
Application fields of stationary fuel cell systems can be seen in industry, data centers, commerce and trade, buildings like hospitals and urban quarters, and virtual power plants, but also for charging stations or maritime applications.
With start of series production in 2025ff., an initial manufacturing capacity of 200 MW (electric) is scheduled – with which the average of more than 400,000 four-person households can be supplied with electricity.
Main production and engineering sites will be located in Bamberg, Homburg, Wernau and Stuttgart in Germany. The project has started in January 2022.
