AVL List - SO-MSC Electrolyzer (AT10)

In order to reduce the production costs of renewable hydrogen and to achieve the challenging electrolysis capacities (2x40 GW by 2030) targeted by Europe (see “A hydrogen strategy for a climate-neutral Europe”, EC, 2020), it is absolutely necessary to improve and scale up corresponding steam electrolyser technologies – particularly reducing the costs and improving the durability. In this project, the development and manufacturing of the world's first 1 MW high-temperature solid oxide electrolyser based on metal-supported cells (MSCs) towards series production is performed.

The present project will bring the highly efficient HT (High Temperature)-SOEC technology to maturity, significantly expanding the existing technology portfolio to combat climate change. This allows Europe - being already a strong player in the field of water electrolysis - to further strengthen its global pioneering role in green technologies.
