Ansaldo Green Tech - IANUS (IT42)

The project IANUS is executed by Ansaldo Green Tech (AGT). AGT is part of Ansaldo Energia Group and it is focused on the energy transition business with an innovative and diversified portfolio based on different products including electrolysers plant for green hydrogen production. With reference to the growing hydrogen market, Ansaldo, leveraging on inherited strong competencies and experience, is aiming to position itself as EPC contractor, including in its scope solutions to monitor, control and integrate different energy infrastructures.
The IANUS project has three main objectives:
The first is to develop high temperature electrolysers based on Solid Oxide Technology integrating different stacks in a unique system to offer turn-key solutions. The Solid Oxide technology can be potentially operated both as electrolyser and fuel cell, the project aims to demonstrate at relevant scale this reversible operation.
The second is to set-up a manufacturing asset to produce the electrolyser with a target production capacity of 300MW per year.
The third is to install and commission the electrolyser produced until reaching an installed fleet equal to 350MW.
The possibility for the product to operate both as electrolyser and fuel cell together with the aim of industrialising a unique technology for the energy transition and hydrogen diffusion gives the project its name: Inaus, the ancient roman god of duality, transition and the beginnings.
The electrolyser manufacturing facility will be in Genoa, Italy. The project has started in January 2023 and the first 1MW high temperature electrolyser is expected to be ready for the operation by mid-2025. The project will be completed by January 2029.
