ALSTOM - Traction Bricks project (FR09)
Within IPCEI Hy2Tech, ALSTOM is to develop zero-emission innovative solutions to replace diesel-based rolling stocks in different segments (regional passenger trains and locomotives) on the European rail network. Eight ALSTOM sites are involved with activities covering three different projects with H2 traction bricks and H2 railway applications embedding bricks (locomotives shunting and freight). A central team based in the head office will ensure coordination of the program. Developments concerned by the TF4 are related to shunting locomotive (Traxx Shunter H™) and rail freight applications (Tender H2 HTPG). This will be conducted in close coordination with the Belgium site of Charleroi.
Within TF4, ALSTOM ambition is to develop two strategic rail applications based on the H2 traction bricks project developed in TF2.
One application is dedicated to shunting locomotive. According to their specific missions (shunting in marshalling rail yards, track works, logistic trains for short distances, rescue trains, rail track monitoring), the shunting locomotives operate currently mainly in non-electrified sections with diesel locomotives. The objective is to replace them by hydrogen powered shunting locomotives (Traxx Shunter H™) to reach zero-emission solutions. This will request to develop and to install all the sub-systems in limited volumes and geometries with the right level of performances depending on the profile missions.
The second railway application, Tender H2 Hydrogen Train Powered Generator (HTPG) is related to rail freight. The objective is to a H2 wagon generator to be connected to existing electric locomotives. This concept will allow seamless operations of the locomotive on non-electrified sections.
The projects started in September 2022 and will be completed in 2027. Developments for both rail applications will be led by the site of Belfort, where new infrastructure / industrial processes will be implemented to properly manage specificities and safety aspects of the H2.
