Air Liquide - CurtHyl (NL38)
A world leader in gases, technologies and services for Industry and Health, Air Liquide is present in 73 countries with approximately 67,100 employees and serves more than 3.9 million customers and patients. Oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen are essential small molecules for life, matter and energy. They embody Air Liquide’s scientific territory and have been at the core of the company’s activities since its creation in 1902.
Taking action today while preparing the future is at the heart of Air Liquide’s strategy. With ADVANCE, its strategic plan for 2025, Air Liquide is targeting a global performance, combining financial and extra-financial dimensions.
CurtHyl is Air Liquide’s second large electrolyser project in the Netherlands, located in Maasvlakte 2 conversion park in the Port of Rotterdam.
CurtHyl, with an initial capacity of 200MW, will produce more than 15 000 tons per year of renewable hydrogen, hence avoiding the emission of more than 3 million tons of CO2 during its first 15 years of operation.
The technology solution is based on Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) and will be supplied by Air Liquide Siemens Energy joint venture dedicated to the series production of industrial scale electrolyzers.
CurtHyl will have a decisive role in establishing a competitive value chain for renewable hydrogen, from wind energy. It can be used in industrial plants and in heavy-duty trucks that today run on diesel. The CurtHyl project is both scalable and replicable, which is important to address the rising demand for renewable hydrogen.
CurtHyl has been recognised as a project contributing to decarbonisation of the industry and received the support of the Dutch State through the Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI) Hy2Use program.
As a hydrogen pioneer, Air Liquide is convinced that hydrogen will be decisive to move the industry towards a more sustainable future.
The project is located in the future conversion park at the Maasvlakte 2, Rotterdam. Location has been strategically chosen, both from a renewable power supply and hydrogen distribution standpoints. The conversion park will host large renewable hydrogen production facilities, including CurtHyl, that will enable to create synergies and scale up.
Renewable hydrogen produced will be distributed via an existing hydrogen pipeline owned and operated by Air Liquide, which provides flexibility required for coupling production with the renewable sources and enables industrial and mobility customers to decarbonise their operations.
